BY MY SIDE - Album Commentary
BETTER YOU
This song is about how people are so quick to judge negatively based on stupid reasons. Have you met someone that you thought was a total douche, loser, b!@ch, or __insert here__ to find that they are actually pretty awesome people? I get judged negatively everyday just by being David Choi but I always wonder if they’d still think the way they do if they just met me and had a conversation. Probably not. Get to know someone first, then judge.
BY MY SIDE
Hmmm. This song is more about hope than it is a happy or sad song. I think most people perceive it to be happy. The true meaning of the song, I will keep to myself, but I am glad it has touched as many people as it does. This song has brought couples together and even better - made couples stronger. I’m glad that “By My Side” has made MY world a little brighter than what it spawned from.
THAT GIRL
That Girl was written when I was in high school (2004). This song got me signed to Warner Chappell and it is probably one of the more popular songs in my catalog. This song talks about how you’re trying so hard to convince yourself that you don’t have anymore feelings for that someone you were once with. You screwed up. You wonder what was and could have been. They’re always in your heart.
YOU CAN WIN
Couples, friends, and people in general argue. They fight. There is a struggle. You shed tears. You care so much about that person but there is only so much you can do. Doesn’t it suck when the only person you care about in the world would put you last? When your words mean nothing.
If you care, listen.
UNEASY
When you’re in a relationship, jealousy comes into play at times. It’s stemmed from insecurity from your past. Maybe someone hurt you? Maybe someone lied? Maybe someone even cheated on you. This “Uneasy” feeling arises when you don’t feel as important or valued as when you’re physically with your loved ones. Such a harsh feeling to deal with but we feel it and can’t help it sometimes.
Value your loved ones and give them reasons to trust again.
A DREAM
I had a dream where everything was beautiful. I imagined a paradise. A place I can get lost in and hope and dream in. A kind of place where everything is clear and vivid - Perfection. We live in a crazy world where things aren’t always great. Quite depressing at times. The news pumps out negative information about the horrible things going on in this world - constantly. In the midst of a chaotic and sad world, we can find true beauty and happiness in the simple things that are right next to us.
THIS IS A WAY
Call me a cheesy hopeless romantic but I think seeing old couples is the cutest thing ever. In this day and age with a divorce rate of over 50%, I always ask myself “how do they do it”. I use my head a lot to analyze things but I learned that real love is from the heart. When you use your heart, you just want to take care of the other person. In relationships, people may quit on you or become bored, but don’t become that person. Always remind yourself - through thick or thin and enjoy the ride.
AMY AVENUE
Amy Avenue is a street I used to live on. My entire child and teenage years took place on this street. Lots of memories here. I drive back from time to time and look at all of the change that happened since I lived there. Feelings of nostalgia sweep over me whenever I visit my old home. A bit of sadness too…maybe because I miss being young and careless. The auto-tune was more of a reminder to me that times have changed. A pretty personal song than anything else.
HEAVEN’S EASE
I think lots of people wonder if heaven is something that exists or not but the thought of it definitely appeals to everyone. A perfect place where little angels fly around playing harps and people jump from cloud to cloud. This song wasn’t written for my dog Snoopy…it actually was written before his passing. People who have experienced a death in their lives can relate to this song. In the moment of death, I’d like to hope a heaven exists not only for me, but for all the ones I love.
DESERVE TO BE
Sometimes, we try to love. Sometimes we’re in love for a little bit but it fades away. We’re all looking for “the one”. We date. We play. All in a game. Hearts break and hearts connect. It’s bad when you are TRYING to love and you try to find that something in your mixed emotions but you just can’t. It’s worse when the other person falls in love with you. You have to move on and break a poor heart. Hears shouldn’t be broken.
Everyone deserves to love and be loved in return.
SO WEIGHTLESS
This song is not an analogy for love, sex, or being on drugs. I won’t say what I meant it to be about but it is definitely not a song about those things. I’m glad that it could be taken however the listener wants to take it - pretty interesting interpretations. I’ve always loved oldies and I’m glad I could bring some of that into this song.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW
This song take’s a quirky and lighthearted approach on the subject of DEATH. Oh how shall thee perish? Let me count the ways! At the time, I was inspired by my friend Sam’s story of his near death experience when he went surfing. I think about death often and wonder what happens next. You’ve probably heard the quote “live life to it’s fullest”. I’ve embraced that statement a bit more after I wrote this song. You never know when you’re gone. Experience life, love, hate, and everything in between.
